We Interview Artist Charli Burrowes on Her New Show 'Bloom Girl'

You may recognise her as the oh so talented photographer behind the lens of our UNE PIECE Bloom campaigns, but did you know that Charli Burrowes aka Me Oh My Girl is also an incredibly talented artist/director/writer/all round creative powerhouse? Her latest project is Bloom Girl – a stage show exploring the effects of social media on young women. We chatted to Charli to learn more about the inspiration behind Bloom Girl and what she hopes audiences take away from the show.

In a few short sentences, tell us a little bit about yourself and how ‘Me Oh My’ came to be.

I'm an artist, director and writer based in Brisbane, Australia. MeOhMy started as a blog, documenting my creative journey. It's since evolved into a place where I share my short films + art.

I've been doing this for about 10 years, and in that time I've been lucky enough to have several solo gallery shows, and directed shoots for Universal Music, HBO, Disney and Warner Bros. It's been a pretty unique creative path, but I absolutely love it.

Bloom Girl is my first stage show.

What is your Life Mantra?

'If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.'

Where do you find inspiration in your life and for your work?

The movies, books, art! Absolutely love film.

Can you tell us a little bit about your new show ‘Bloom Girl’?

Bloom Girl is a show about the effects of social media on young women. It's about trying to find a connection in the digital age, and what it means to be 'seen' right now. I play an artist who falls for an influencer. It's funny, silly + a (hopefully) little bit heart-warming.

'@bloomgirl tells a riotous and sacrilegious tale about love and acceptance in a world of influencers who care more about your follower count than what you have to say.'

‘Bloom Girl’ is an 80 minute live stage-show. What inspired you to tell this story on the theatre stage?

After 10 years telling stories online, I wanted to share my most special one with people in real life. I really believe in the power of community and I think art is at it's best when it's a communal experience. I think this show should be felt IRL.

What do you hope audiences take away from the show?

How important it is to be yourself.

What can we expect next from MeOhMy and what are you excited for in the future?

We are touring the show all over Australia and (hopefully) heading overseas with her to Edinburgh Fringe Festival, aka the biggest arts festival in ze world!

The 'Bloom Girl' show runs from February 1 to 11 at Thomas Dixon Centre, Brisbane. Tickets are limited.
